Personal Reflection

I think that satire is the only way to mock something with out being offensive.  Satire is supposed to make a point and prove that something is absolutely ridiculous and it does so without being offensive.  Althought there is a point were the sarcasism becomes disrimination.  It is very hard to identify when satire becomes to much because it depends on an individuals morals.  Therefore many people think that satire is made for bad purposes, but satire is a means of casting a negative issue for good reasons.  Our society is based on satire.  All television shows are based on the idea of racism, uneducated doctors, nonfunctional families, outsourcing jobs, and much more.  People use satire simply put to male people laugh and it should not be taken negatively.

'The Google'

Google Launches 'The Google' For Older Adults

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA—The popular search engine Google announced plans Friday to launch a new site, TheGoogle.com, to appeal to older adults not able to navigate the original website's single text field and two clearly marked buttons.  "The Google will have all the same information currently found on regular Google, but with the added features of not stealing your credit-card numbers or giving your computer all kinds of viruses," said Rick Tillich, The Google project director. "All you have to do to turn the website on is put the little blinking line thing in the cyberspace window at the top of the screen, type 'thegoogle.com,' and press 'return'—although it will also recognize http.wwwthegoogle.com, google.aol, and 'THEGOOGLE' typed into a Word document."  Tillich added that he hopes the site will soon replace Yahoo Internet Website.com as the most popular search engine for users over 55.

This is an example of satire because it is satirizing that older people are not capable of using the Internet.  They need bigger fonts since their eyesight is so poor and the article is making fun of idea that elderly people do not know how to use technology since when they were kids there was a milkman delivering their milk and they were riding their bikes to work. It is also stating that the older you get the slower you become so they made this website so easy to navigate that even a 1 year old child could use it.  This fits into the catergory if satire because it is probing that since technology is so new everyone who was born 40 years ago cannot use it.

BP Oil Spill - Satire

This is the perfect example of satire because everyone knows that BP was responsible and that they did not care about the clean up efforts and did not take the responsibility seriously.  This video shows the represenative not caring about this video because he is too busy thinking about other things. He makes refernces to toys, his family, and even tells the public to stop blaming BP because it is our own governments fault.  It is very easy to satarize BP because they are not taking their clean-up efforts seriously and therefore it is affecting their corporation. This fits into this category because the CEO is making a fool of himself.

Obama Election - Satire

This video fits into the category of satire because the presidential election was in a political viewpoint very onesided.  There was a lot of speculationa nd discrimination on Obama and it caused many people to vote against him because of all the negative connotations he had.  This is evident because as Homer tries to vote for Obama he is denied him vote and their is only the option of voting for McCain.  When he objects he dissappears so that he will not be spreading any negative rumors about McCain.  This is making fun of how corrupt politics are today.

Tiger Woods - Satire

These two cartoons show satire because the scandal of Tiger Woods hti the nedia so hard that it was the most popular news story for that month and it shows how undisciplined our society is.  Obama is giving a speech and the paparazzi doesn't care and instead tries to talk to Tiger.  The story of his affair should have been so repulsive that people should have avoided him but instaed it made him more popular (in a negative aspect).  We would have thought that electing the first black President and listening to his speech since our economy is so low right now would be surely more important than hearinf about Tiger Woods and his horrible actions.

George Bush - Political Satire

  • "A year ago, my approval rating was in the 30s, my nominee for the Supreme Court had just withdrawn, and my Vice President had shot someone. Ahhh, those were the good old days." – George W. Bush, at the 2007 Radio-TV Correspondents' dinner

  • "So what?" –President Bush, responding to a an ABC News correspondent who pointed out that Al Qaeda wasn't a threat in Iraq until after the U.S. invaded, Dec. 14, 2008

  • These two quotes are examples of satire because they show how uneducated our President was.  It is unbelievable that we trusted our nations security to someone who said "so what" when it was discovered that Al Qaeda wasn't a threat until after the U.S. invaed.  Or someone who mentioned that the past "was the good old days" as if he doesn't care about the direction that our country is headed to now.  Politics has become more and more of a joke and this compliation of quotes only prove how depressing out nation really is.
